Patients belong in the process — not at the end of it.
You can track a delivery to your door. It should not be harder to find out what is happening with a request for healthcare.
Was the request submitted? Is information missing? Who is waiting? Has a decision been made? What can you do next?
People should not have to connect the pieces themselves to answer those questions.
Starting with prior authorization
Prior authorization is the approval a health plan requires before certain care. A request can involve a provider, the plan and other organizations, while the person waiting for care has little visibility into its progress.
Smart Health Network is connecting that work so updates can follow the request and reach the people who need them.
What will I be able to see?
Members have a right under the Network Rules to access their own Network transaction records. These identify the exchanges and events recorded by SHN; they are not a complete copy of every record held by a plan or provider.
When will it be available?
Organizational exchange can begin before the member-facing service launches. SHN retains the relevant history for later access. The member-facing access method and launch timing will be announced separately.
Is this the Patient Access API?
No. Member Access to Network transaction records is a baseline right under the Rules. A plan’s use of the Patient Access API through SHN is a separate exchange capability.
Your rights are part of the foundation
Protected access is not something you should have to buy as an extra. Your information should be used for the work it is authorized to support, not treated as a commodity.
The independent Data Rights Trust serves as a patient fiduciary, helping uphold privacy, access, consent and accountability across the network.
Help keep the person at the center
Patient advocates, care teams and application partners can help make status understandable and useful. Share what people need to know and where today’s process leaves them without an answer.
Sign up for project updates or contact the team about contributing to that work. Please do not send personal health information.
Stay connected to the work
This form is for project updates, not help with an individual authorization. Please do not include health information. For a current request, contact your plan or care team.
